Swiss-American zoologist and geologist. Professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University. Louis Agassiz was born in Môtier-en-Vuly, Switzerland. He studied at the universities of Zürich, Erlangen (Ph.D., 1829), Heidelberg, and Munich (M.D., 1830). Franklin B. Hough was born in Martinsburg, NY in 1822. He studied medicine and practiced in Somerville, NY from 1848 to 1852. He is described as a "pioneer historian of counties in New York State" and an advocate of forest conservation. In 1855 and 1865, he was Superintendent of the State Census for New York and was also involved in the 1875 census.
